Telephones

Overview

Telecommunications, a part of UTS Operations, provides telephone services to the Oakland University campus community. Telephone services include local calls, long distance calls, conference calls, voicemail, and other services.

Telephone support includes processes and procedures to handle requests or trouble reports. A ticket is processed through the UTS Helpdesk Footprints ticketing system. Trouble reports generally consist of line problems, phone problems, billing issues and voicemail requests. Other phone requests consist of moving, adding or changing phone lines or features.

Services

The list of telephone services follows:

  • Provide dial tone to phone devices
  • Call services - Campus-to-campus calls, local/toll calls, domestic long distance calls, international long distance calls and conference calls
  • Special services - Calling cards, voicemail, auto-attendance and automatic call distribution
  • Billing

    Campus-to-campus calling and voicemail services are automatically turned on when a phone line is activated. All other services require a request to the UTS Helpdesk. For additional information refer to Voice Communication Guidelines.

    Phone devices allow customers to call another party. ROLMphones are provided by the university to faculty and staff and Optiset phones are provided to students. Both ROLMphones and Optiset phones are digital and the only phones supported by UTS.

    Analog phone devices are FAX machines, alarms, emergency phones, elevator phones and phones you might purchase from a local retailer. Such devices and phones are the responsiblity of the customer or department. Note that phones purchased from a local retailer are not supported and will not work in some locations.

    Voicemail

    Voicemail is available with most phone activations for faculty, staff and students on campus. Voicemail services are automatically turned on when a phone line is activated. Each voicemail box can store up to 15 messages and saved messages can be saved for 4 weeks. To access your mailbox on campus, press the MSGWT button on your phone or dial x4244 (the direct access number to voicemail), and follow the voice-prompt instructions. If you are off campus, dial 248-370-4244 to access your mailbox from a touch-tone phone. To request a password reset of your voicemail box, send an email to please send email to helpdesk@oakland.edu.

    Support

    Telephone support includes trouble reports on phone services and requests for phone moves, adds, and changes (called MAC requests). Trouble reports are line problems, phone problems, and billing issues. MAC requests include:

  • Adding a phone to a new office
  • Moving a phone from one office to another
  • Swapping phones between offices
  • Changing features on a phone
  • Office or department moves

    There are no costs when UTS responds to trouble reports, however there is a cost associated with MAC requests.

    Directory Information

    For the directory assistance, check the online directory Campus Directory or call dial "0" M-F, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    For police assistance other than emergencies, dial "3331".
    For emergency assistance, dial "911".
    Information that is not appearing correctly on the Campus Directory should be reported directly to the department responsible for the information. Office addresses are retrieved from the SunGardHE Banner system (OF address type) that is maintained by the department.

    Cell Phones

    For university employees whose job duties and responsiblities require that the employee be on call and carry a cell phone, the university has a policy,
