Employment Opportunities

Project Upward Bound at Oakland University is a great working environment for anyone who shares the passion of enriching students’ lives. OU’s Project Upward Bound offers staff positions that are structured to be actively involved with the participants.

The PUB team is committed to helping PUB participants reach their college/career goals. For the protection of participants, every applicant must agree to a criminal history search.

Teachers

PUB teachers are carefully selected so that participant learning is maximized. We seek teachers who are certified in the core discipline they want to teach (Math, Science, or English). They must be creative in their approach to teaching and have a compatible temperament for working with the TRIO high school population that PUB serves.

Before each Summer Academy, teachers must participate in the Annual Staff Development Workshop. This is a two-day training seminar, in May, where experts present the latest teaching theories, methods, and tools so that PUB teachers are always kept updated. The outcomes of the Workshop are:

  • The theme for the next Program Year (beginning with the Summer Academy);
  • Cross-disciplinary lesson plans; and
  • Suggested field trips that support the thematic lesson plans.

Head Resident

Every summer, Project Upward Bound participants live in on campus. There is a head resident who lives in the residence hall to provide continual supervision. The head resident supervises peer mentors and night watch people, monitors the trips, conducts team building workshops, holds weekly meetings to discuss issues, resolves concerns, coordinates the incentive system and performs many other duties.

Qualifications are as follows:

  • Bachelor's degree and completion or near completion of a graduate degree w/2.50 G.P.A.

  • Valid Michigan driver’s license.

  • Participation in on-site unpaid training a week before the start of the Summer Academy.

Peer Mentors

Peer Mentors have the very important and challenging role of being both mentor and supervisor of Summer Academy participants. They facilitate academic, social, and cultural development of high school students by being mentors, role models, and advisors for participants in all non-academic settings. Peer Mentors help participants enhance learning skills, social development, self-esteem and self-confidence. Being a Peer Mentor provides good experience for people interested in entering education and human service careers.

Qualifications are as follows:

  • Junior class standing w/2.50 overall G.P.A. by the end of the current spring semester.
  • Extracurricular activities that demonstrate good leadership, communication, and social skills and an appropriate level of maturity.
  • Previous experience working with academically at risk, culturally diverse students.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license.
  • Commitment to help participants prepare for college; commitment to be a positive role model.
  • Participation in on-site unpaid training a week before the start of program (room and board provided).

Night Watch Person

The Night Watch Person secures the building by assuring that all entry and stairwell doors are locked by 10 p.m. during the Summer Academy. He/she provides overnight internal surveillance of residence hall along with active members of the PUB Parent Association.
