Nuclear Medicine Technology

Nuclear Medicine Technologists use radioactive substances in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. A Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for the safe and proper handling of radioactive materials, the care and operation of radiation detection equipment, knowledge of the technical and biological principles upon which nuclear medicine procedures are based, and patient care.

To prepare for a career in Nuclear Medicine, a student must have a strong background in sciences including anatomy, physiology, math, physics and computer science. A career in Nuclear Medicine requires completion of prerequisite course work from Oakland University, and clinical education in an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program. Individuals interested in a career in Nuclear Medicine Technology must display attributes of compassion and concern, and be emotionally mature to handle the psychological stress of dealing with seriously ill patients.

Specialization in Nuclear Medicine

Oakland University is affiliated with two Schools of Nuclear Medicine Technology for the professional education component of this specialization, the William Beaumont Hospital School of Nuclear Medicine Technology (https://www.beaumonthospitals.com/sah), and the Nuclear Medicine Institute, at the University of Findlay (http://www.findlay.edu/academics/colleges/cohp/academicprograms/undergraduate/NMIP/) . Both programs are accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT).

Students may apply for specialization standing in Nuclear Medicine after completing the preprofessional program. The first two years consist of the MLS core curriculum. Application to the professional programs is made during the junior year (see below). Acceptance into the internship program is competitive and is based on grade point average, personal interview and letters of recommendation. The junior year consists of the prescribed professional course requirements at Oakland University, and the clinical program in nuclear medicine technology fulfils the senior year academic requirements (see major checklist for complete list of required courses).

School of Nuclear Medicine Technology, William Beaumont Hospital:

Beaumont Hospital's School of Nuclear Medicine Technology accepts ten students each year for its 14-1/2 month program. Applications for this program must be received by April 15th for the class beginning in September of that year (typically winter semester of the student's junior year). All pre-requisite coursework must be completed by the time the program begins.

In addition to academic prerequisites, the School of Nuclear Medicine has specified non-academic criteria (technical performance standards) that all applicants are expected to meet in order to participate in the program and professional practice. For specific information on Admission Requirements, Application Procedures, and Selection Criteria, visit the William Beaumont Hospital Schools of Allied Health web site: http://www.beaumonthospitals.com/alliedhealth or contact

Nuclear Medicine Institute, Findlay Ohio:

NMI admits two classes (50 students each) per year, one in the Spring (January) and one in the Fall (August). Deadline for application for the January class is April 1st of the preceding year, and deadline for application for the August class is Nov 1st of the preceding year.

The students spend one semester (17 weeks) on the Findlay Ohio campus, for full-time didactic coursework, then go to a clinical site for a full-time, 35 week clinical experience. NMI cooperates with a number of approved affiliate health care institutions and nuclear pharmacies throughout Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Texas for the clinical internship of its students. The following Michigan hospitals are clinic affiliates of NMI: Children's Hospital of Michigan (Detroit), Harper Hospitals (Detroit), University of Michigan Health System (Ann Arbor), The V.A. Health Care Systems, (Ann Arbor), W.A. Foote Memorial Hospital (Jackson), and Mercy Memorial Hospital (Monroe). For a complete listing of all clinical affiliates, visit their web site (http://www.findlay.edu/academics/colleges/cohp/academicprograms/undergraduate/NMIP/).

In addition to academic prerequisites, the NMI has specified non-academic criteria (technical performance standards) that all applicants are expected to meet in order to participate in the program and professional practice. For specific information on Admission Requirements, Application Procedures, and Selection Criteria, visit the NMI web site.

Upon successful completion of either program, graduates are eligible to take the national certification examinations for Nuclear Medicine administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) for Nuclear Medicine or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
