Welcome to Academic Advising for the School of Health Sciences

Two professional academic advisers, Michelle Southward and Maria DeWitt, are available to assist students with School of Health Sciences degree requirements, plans of work, course scheduling, transfer course evaluation, and health career choices. Freshmen and transfer student orientation advising is required for all entering students. Thereafter, students are encouraged to make appointments with an adviser regularly to monitor their progress.

Student Responsibilities

• Carefully read information on your chosen major, specialization, concentration, minor, etc.
• Remember that some programs are competitive and admission may not be guaranteed.
• Requirements for and application to competitive programs vary. As a student, it is your responsibility to make sure that you understand the requirements, application procedures, deadlines, etc. for the competitive programs.
• Information can be found in your catalog and online at this website. You should also keep in touch with SHS advisers for more information. Schedule appointments at least once per year.

Meeting With An Adviser

• Advising appointments are typically available Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Some evening appointments (after 5 p.m.) are available.
• Please note that CURRENT OAKLAND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS can now schedule their appointments online. To visit our online scheduler to schedule your appointment now click here.
• Non Oakland University students can call (248)370-3562 to schedule an appointment.
• Walk-in advising on a first-come, first-served basis is also available. Please visit the walk in advising schedule for a list of walk in advising dates.
• Meeting with your adviser on a regular basis is strongly recommended.
• Please remember that scheduling appointments around registration time is difficult. Make your appointment at least 2-3 weeks in advance!

Faculty members in the School of Health Sciences are also available to assist with curriculum and course questions once students are enrolled in Health Sciences major coursework.
