Requesting Title: Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals
Author: Attwood, Tony
Published: 1998
Summary:
Tony Attwood's guide will assist parents and professionals with the identification, treatment and care of both children and adults with Asperger's Syndrome. The book provides a description and analysis of the unusual characteristics of the syndrome and practical strategies to reduce those that are most conspicuous or debilitating.
Reader Reviews:
This is probably considered the "primer" book on Asperger's Syndrome. Tony Atwood is known worldwide as the leading authroity on the subject. He introduces the reader to Asperger's through case studies, research, observation and ancedotal evidence. Dr. Atwood has tried to present this material in a scholarly fashion without making it too difficult for the laymen to grasp. He also has noted that those with Asperger's Syndrome can have a speech delay, which was previously not thought to be accurate according to the DSM. Atwood suggests that 50% of his clients with AS have had a speech delay, perhaps suggesting that this change may be written into future DSM's for AS. There is also a very helpful question/answer section towards the end of the book. Overall, the book is not without its small flaws but I would highly recommend it. Nick Dubin M.A, ED
