The Department of Writing and Rhetoric (WRT), a core department in the College of Arts and Sciences, engages in teaching, research, and scholarship related to first year writing, business writing, technical writing, professional writing, and special topics in literacy studies. With a faculty of tenured and tenure-track faculty, full-time special instructors, and special lecturers with rich and diverse experiences in the teaching of rhetoric and composition, the program is staffed to provide a broad range of instruction and service for the university and is grounded in contemporary theory and research in literacy studies. Central to this understanding is an ability to think critically about emerging forms of literacy and to adapt to the rhetorical demands of new media.
Writing and Rhetoric faculty conduct research in writing program administration, first-year writing, the teaching of writing and rhetoric in computer-mediated environments, digital rhetorics and new media studies, the history of rhetoric, revision, ESL writing instruction, teacher preparation, Writing-Across-the-Curriculum, reading-writing connections, disciplinary history, undergraduate degree programs and curriculum development, literacy studies, professional writing, and writing center pedagogy. Faculty members serve on committees that contribute to departmental programs and governance and contribute our time and expertise to work with students, with colleagues across the campus, and with community groups. We contribute to a variety of programs at Oakland, including the Bachelor of General Studies, the Honors College, International Education, Linguistics, and Women’s Studies, as well as other units such as eLearning and Instructional Services and the Writing Center. Writing and Rhetoric faculty emphasize a quality undergraduate experience, engaging students in research and activities supportive of the curriculum. We value scholarship, teaching and service as equally important to the department’s mission.
