Writing and Communicating Across the Curriculum
[Mission]     [Contact]     [What's New]     [Past Events]

WAC Mission

The mission of this initiative is four-fold:

To contribute to a distinctive undergraduate experience at Oakland University by helping promote students’ growth as writers and communicators, as researchers and as active participants in a democratic society.

To help faculty develop expertise in using writing and other forms of communication (oral, visual, digital) as vehicles for student learning, and to help faculty develop expertise in assessing students’ abilities (in ways that go beyond multiple choice and short answer tests).

To help promote a “culture”/cohesive vision of writing and communicating across the curriculum, encouraging collaboration among Oakland University faculty involved in related initiatives (e.g., Forensics team, Writing Excellence Awards, Festival of Writing, and other departmental initiatives in Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Business and Health Sciences focused on using writing/communicating to learn).

To help establish Oakland University as a nationally known center for bringing together faculty from across the disciplines (including but not limited to Rhetoric/Composition and Communication) to share scholarship and innovative approaches for developing students’ written/oral/visual/digital literacies, and for preparing students to enter increasingly diverse and complex workplaces.
