Foreign Travel

This information provides general information for faculty and staff members who are planning a work-related trip overseas. Whether your stay will last a few days or several months, there are some steps that you can take before departure that will help ensure a more pleasant trip.

REGISTRATION OF FOREIGN TRAVEL

All travelers must register with Risk Management when travelling to foreign countries. Before travelling, register at Foreign Travel Registration

DESTINATION

Awareness of the culture, laws and the general political situation in foreign countries is an important element of your travel plans. Having basic information will enhance the experience of your stay abroad.

Levels of risk can change rapidly, triggered by internal or external events. It is advisable to monitor the political climate and other factors that may affect your personal safety.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

There are several Internet Web sites that provide useful information for your overseas trip. Included below are state department sites that provide general updates and warnings of unrest or natural disasters:

Web-Sites

U.S. EMBASSY

If you are planning an extended stay overseas, it is advisable to register with the U.S. Embassy as soon as possible following arrival in a foreign country. Registration facilitates emergency communication and/or evacuation. The Regional Security Officer or Post Security Officer, stationed in embassies and consulates, can provide guidance and advice on security concerns. Non-U.S. citizens should register with the embassy of their home country.

WHEREABOUTS

Be sure that you leave an address and telephone number where you can be contacted with your OU department. A detailed plan of your itinerary should be left with relatives, colleagues and friends in the United States.

MEDICAL BENEFITS

Make sure that you understand what type of coverage your medical plans will provide for you and your family while overseas. Information can be found in the enrollment brochures that you received during open enrollment or visit Oakland University's Staff Benefits and Employee Relations Department to discuss specific questions you may have.

HEALTH QUESTIONS

Please contact your personal physician or the Graham Health Center well in advance of departure, regarding potential health problems and required vaccinations. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention Web site at http://www.cdc.gov// provides information on required vaccines for overseas travel. If you are on daily medication inquire if it is available overseas and discuss availability and supplies with your physician and pharmacist.

INSURANCE COVERAGE

Oakland University provides foreign liability insurance coverage for employees traveling overseas on university business. The Executive Assistance Program (EAP) can assist you with medical, personal and travel issues. Informational brochures are available through the Risk Management Department. Our current foreign liability carrier does not insure for travel to "Any country or jurisdiction which is the subject of trade or economic sanctions imposed by the laws or regulations of the USA".

Auto Coverage

Cars should be rented in the university's name, and local insurance purchased at the time of rental. You are not protected under the university's coverage and should seek advice from your personal auto carrier prior to departure. Most countries have a fine or jail penalty if you do not buy local insurance.
