WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH EVENT

Title IX and Reproductive Justice: an Update

  • Location: Lake Michigan Room in the Oakland Center on OU’s Campus

  • Date: Thursday, March 31st

  • Featuring: Renee Chelian - Executive Director of Northland Family Planning Centers, Chelian recently spoke at the United Nations advocating for reproductive rights for women

    Speaking on: “The Continued Struggle for Reproductive Healthcare in Michigan” which discusses the current status of reproductive rights in Michigan and beyond, and the struggles of working in the field of reproductive and abortion care.

    Jennifer Martin - Special Lecturer at Oakland University in the Women and Gender Studies Program

    Speaking on: “Title IX: Triumphs and Continuing Challenges” which discusses women’s experiences before and after Title IX, the federal law passed in 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination in all federally funded educational programs, and examines how Title IX can be used to protect students from sexual harassment, including LGBTQ students.

    The SEHS Dean's Office and the SEHS LGBTQI Initiative are pleased to announce the 2011 Winter Lecture Series, organized around the theme "Seeing the Moment, Contesting Frames, Queering Connections to Education and Justice." Lectures will be by Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, Dr. Lance McCready, and, jointly, Dr. Therese Quinn and Dr. Erica Meiners. We encourage you to attend.     Turning Point Welcomes Interns
    Turning Point welcomed incoming interns from Oakland University as well as Wayne State, U of D Mercy, MSU and Baker College. After completing training they will be placed throughout Turning Point's programs.



    The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Ally Employee Resource Group is proud to announce it's initial offering of our undergraduate scholarship for students who have demonstrated leadership in the LGBTQA community on campus and/or in the larger community.

    This scholarship is open to any full-time undergrad with an established OU GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants are asked to submit a short essay and a letter of recommendation noting their service to the community. The selected student will receive $500 towards their University expenses Winter semester 2011. We will be offering a $1000 full-year scholarship Fall 2011.     The Women and Gender Studies program received a "Link Award" from the Center for Student Activities and Leadership Development at Oakland University for contributions to student organizations and student leadership at OU.



    OU Professors discuss their summer courses for Women and Gender Studies: Professor Patricia Wren of the School of Health Sciences and Professor Tim Larrabee of the School of Education talk about their respective summer 2010 courses for Women and Gender Studies.     WGS 382 "Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Education" has received approval for a general education course in U.S. Diversity as well as a writing intensive course in general education (prerequisite: completion of the university writing foundation requirement).



    Feminism Going Forward at Oakland University - As part of Cherie Rolfe's JRN 411 multimedia project, she used a video she shot at the WGS fall luncheon in November 2009. Feminism goes forward!



    TWO ADDITIONAL ELECTIVES
    For those who are interested in pursuing careers in non-profit organizations after graduation two courses offered by the Department of Political Science/Public Administration are available which will count towards a Women and Gender Studies elective in either a major or a minor.

    • PA 510 - Nonprofit Organizations and Management (which is open to undergraduates) will be offered Fall 2008 on Thursday nights from 6:30-9:40 p.m. This course is offered once every two years.

    • PA 511 Fundraising and Philanthropy, is not currently scheduled for the upcoming year but may come up in the following years.

    Both of these courses, combined with an internship, will be attractive when applying for jobs in the non-profit market. Contact Professor Jo Reger with questions at reger@oakland.edu.

    Jo Reger was recently interviewed by Oregon Public Broadcasting regarding the election of a new leader for the National Organization for Women at this weekend's conference in Indianapolis. The battle over who will succeed Kim Gandy, who has reached the term limit after eight years, pits younger and older feminists.     NEWS ABOUT OUR STUDENTS

    Cherie Rolfe a Journalism major minoring in Women and Gender Studies has been named recipient of the Bunting and Briggs Freedom of the Press Scholarship for the fall semester. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in journalism who plans to work as a reporter upon graduation and is currently employed at least 20 hours per week at a professional newspaper or works for an Oakland University student newspaper in a staff writer or editor capacity. The recipient is selected by the Journalism faculty and the award amount varies. Awards are made by the Department of Communication and Journalism. Cherie Rolfe

    Juquatta Brewer, a minor in Women and Gender Studies (Major: Psychology) is one of three recipients of the prestigious Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Award for contributions and promotion of interracial understand and tolerance. Read the article KOD scholarship award winners

    Several Women and Gender Studies students from Oakland University participated at the Meeting of Minds XVII on May 15, 2009 which was hosted by the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Oral presentations sponsored by Professor Joann Reger included:

    Leah MoscowitzLeah Moscowitz

    Leah has been an invaluable part of the GSC (Gender and Sexuality Center) team since she started her internship in September 2008. Her passion and dedication to women and the LGBT comunity at OU is evident in her willingness to go the extra mile and work beyond what is required of her internship. Leah has organized the entire GSC library, facilitates "That Time of the Week," helps with our monthly social awareness programs, and is currently creating OU's first sexual assault awareness and prevention program. She was awarded the Women and Gender Studies Service and Leadership Award in April 2009

    Callie L. Moss, a Women and Gender Studies major, received the Women of Oakland University Critical Difference Scholarship for 2008-2009. This award is handed out annually to students who are single head of household who have had their education interrupted for at least one year. Applicants must have earned at least 16 credits at the university level with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Congratulations Callie!
