About Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale is considered to be the founder of modern nursing. Her systematic organization of knowledge about person, health and environment, as reflected in her laws of nursing, provided a distinct perspective for the discipline of nursing. She was dedicated to the care of the sick and injured and immersed herself in research to improve their lives. According to Nightingale, a nurse was any person who had the charge of the personal health of somebody whether sick or well.

She believed that nursing activities were to be based on passion, observation and experience, as well as statistical data, knowledge of cleanliness, nutrition, clean environment, and administrative skills. She took these values to the front lines in the Crimean War and subsequently established a school for the formal education of nurses at London's St. Thomas Hospital in 1860.

Nightingale's philosophy is reflective of the beliefs held by Oakland University School of Nursing - that nursing, and nurses, are integral to facilitating the health and well being among all people and their communities. For this reason, the Nightingale Awards for Nursing® were established in 1989. Nightingale nurses are caring, compassionate, and apply the education they have to problem solving and leadership. These are the characteristics that the Nightingale recipients portray, and the characteristics that we instill in our students.

Become a part of the growing community who support these outstanding nurses!
