Continuing Education - Nurse/Health Care Manager's Leadership Series

Program Series Theme: The purpose of this six course series is to enhance the management and leadership skills of nurses and health care staff, particularly those in first- line management positions.

Target Audience: Nurses and Healthcare Staff in First Line Management Positions.

Program Schedule: Six, four-hour sessions offered on Friday mornings from 8 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in 238 Elliott Hall on Oakland University’s Campus.

Program Dates: February 6, February 13, February 20, February 27, March 5 and March 12 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Program Cost: $1,000 per participant for the six-session series. A 10% discount is offered to organizations with five or more participants in the series.

Requirements: (for the successful completion of each offering)

  • Attendance at the entire session including completing the sign-in and sign-out forms.
  • Completing and returning the seminar evaluation form.

Continuing Education Hours: Continuing Education Requirements for Michigan Nurses: The Administrative Rules of the Michigan Board of Nursing states that a licensee may earn all 25 hours of required continuing education at a continuing education program related to nursing practice offered by an educational program approved by the board. Oakland University meets this standard.

Class Descriptions:

Foundations of Leadership (February 6, 2004)-- New managers and aspiring managers will benefit from learning the basics of leadership including personal awareness and style, the dynamics of working relationships and teams, organizational and influencing skills throughout all levels of the organization and conflict resolution. This foundation course will identify the challenges of moving into leadership roles and help the individual develop leadership behaviors from formative stages. Personal assessments and exercises will allow individuals to practice and analyze their progress and develop their strengths.

Financial Management I (February 13, 2004)-- Class participants will be presented an overview of healthcare finance and financial management concepts. Medicare, PPO, reimbursement plans, nature of accrual accounting, and the budgeting process including capital justification are a few of the topics that will be included in the overview. Students will learn practical applications of financial concepts.

Financial Management II (February 20, 2004)-- Class participants will examine budget management with topics to include budgeting and variance reports, justification of variances, management of staffing FTEs, agency and overtime issues, payroll with variable census, survival financial resource tool kit, and action plans.

Human Resource (HR) Management (February 27, 2004)-- Concepts such as attraction, interviewing, performance, retention, attendance, satisfaction, and the financial impact of each on the overall business equation will be discussed in this class. Interactive case studies will bring the concepts to life. Students will learn to consider each factor as they make HR decisions or create HR policies.

Productivity: Staffing Mix, Acuity and Patient Outcomes (March 5, 2004)-- The purpose of this class is to examine the benefit/uses/shortcomings of patient acuity measurement systems, factors driving staffing levels and mix, mandatory minimum staffing levels and their relationship to patient outcomes. In addition, methods for measuring costs and benefits of various nursing care delivery models as a basis for selecting models best suited to achieving expected outcome results will be covered.

Process Improvement (March 12, 2004)-- Students will be introduced to the concepts and principles of process improvement. The concepts of quality and the steps of process improvement will be defined. The framework for change that promotes responsibility and accountability for organizational improvement, the importance of customer service, and management strategies will be highlighted. In addition, the priorities and strategies of select regulatory bodies that oversee and accredit health care delivery (e.g., JCAHO, HCFFA) and how these effect process improvement will be covered in the class. The role of information, information analysis and information systems in process improvement will also be discussed.
