Undergraduate Admissions

Nursing @ Oakland UniversityStudents wishing to enter Oakland University with a pre-nursing major should have completed at least two years of high school mathematics, including algebra; one year of college preparatory biology; and one year of chemistry, with a grade-point-average of 2.8 or better in each. A cumulative average of 2.8 or better is required for admission to the pre-nursing program at Oakland.

During the pre-nursing freshman year, students take introductory courses in the natural and social sciences and the humanities. Application for admission to the nursing program occurs on a rolling basis. Students should submit a School of Nursing application during the semester in which they will complete the pre-requisite courses. The student must be in good standing in the university. Positions are filled with applicants best qualified to succeed in the nursing program. Preference is given to students who have completed a majority of their fall and winter pre-nursing requirements at Oakland University. The School of Nursing encourages and actively seeks male and minority applicants. Persons who are disabled will be considered for admission to the School of Nursing on an individual basis.

Graduate Admissions

An applicant for admission to the Master of Science in Nursing program must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited institution with an undergraduate cumulative grade-point-average of 3.0 or above. Applicants must show satisfactory achievement on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test (verbal, quantitative and analytical). Individuals must have a current license or be eligible to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Michigan and carry minimum malpractice insurance of $1,000,000 before entering the program's clinical courses.

Regular admission to the program will be considered when the university has received the following materials:

  1. An application for admission to graduate study, accompanied by a non-refundable application fee.
  2. Official transcripts of all graduate and undergraduate coursework
  3. Two recommendations attesting to the applicant's professional ability, (one recommendation must be from the applicant's supervisor if she/he is employed).
  4. Official Graduate Record Examination results.
  5. A professional goal statement of 500-1000 words focused on the applicant's professional goals, experience and contributions the applicant expects to make to nursing.

Special graduate status may be given to applicants who have not yet taken their Graduate Record Exam. A maximum of 12 credit hours can be taken in the special status. Students must then complete the GRE to progress.

Transfer Admissions

The community college transfer credit limit for School of Nursing students is 63 credits. Students may transfer applicable community college credits at any time during their course of study. Additional credit may be transferred from regionally accredited four-year institutions. At least 32 nursing credits must be earned at Oakland University. (Transfer students must have a total of 125 credits, including transfer credits, to graduate.) RN/BSN applicants must have attained a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 to be considered for admission.
