Welcome to the Journalism Program at Oakland University
“Journalism is one of the great and intellectual professions.”
Joseph Pulitzer
Journalism is a liberal arts major designed to prepare students for careers in all aspects of journalism, from news to public relations and advertising, and across all platforms of mass media, including print, broadcast and online. It is a student-centered, writing-intensive program with small class sizes (many are held in computer labs where 20 students is the maximum).
All classes involve active student participation. Students may concentrate on either print, broadcast or online journalism within the news track, or may choose to follow a course of study that focuses on public relations or advertising, or a combination of those areas of study. All journalism majors also study courses that apply across the profession, such as media ethics and law.
Journalism students are also actively involved outside of the classroom, through student media outlets including The Oakland Post, WXOU radio, and OUTV, the campus television station which airs local news, information and sports programming. All of our students also complete internships, gaining valuable experience and contacts within a major media market, and produce portfolios of their work, which aid in beginning their careers.
If you are interested in a career in media, Oakland University’s Journalism Program can help you get there. Browse through our Web site. E-mail Interim Director Garry Gilbert (gjgilber@oakland.edu) or call (248) 370-4120 if you have any questions.
