Graduation Checklist

Information on this website is intended to guide you in completing your degree requirements.  It is not to substitute for departmental advising. See your departmental adviser to confirm that you have met all the following requirements and to confirm that no additional departmental requirements exist.

Graduation Checklist For Master’s Students

  1. A program of study must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning (520 O'Dowd).
  2. An Application for Graduation must be completed by the stated deadline, for the term in which you expect to graduate.  Earlier submission is strongly encouraged.
  3. If writing a master's thesis, it must be successfully defended and submitted to the Office of Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning (520 O'Dowd) by the published deadline listed in the Important Dates for Graduate Students and Coordinators.
  4. Your academic record must be reviewed for any unmet requirements:
    • Any incomplete (I) or progress (P) grades must be removed.
    • Transfer credits must be approved and processed by the beginning of the semester of intended graduation. 
    • Transfer credits must have been completed within the 6-year time limit to count toward degree requirements.
    • Degrees NOT completed within the university's 6-year time limit, require an approved Petition of Exception (a 2-year extension for a maximum of an 8 year total).
    • Overall GPA to graduate with a master's degree is 3.0.
  5. If completing a thesis, it must be successfully defended 6 weeks prior to the last day of the semester.
  6. All theses must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning (520 O'Dowd) 4 weeks before the last day of the semester.
  7. If graduation requirements are not completed by the deadlines, you must reapply in the Office of Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning (520 O'Dowd) for the term in which you expect to complete degree requirements.

Master’s students, within one term of completing their degree requirements, may participate in commencement. A Request to Participate in Commencement Ceremony form must be approved by your academic adviser and department chair then submitted to the Office of Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning (520 O'Dowd) for final approval.

 


Graduation Checklist For Doctoral Students

  1. A program of study must be filed in Office of Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning (520 O'Dowd).
  2. An Application for Graduation must be completed by the stated deadline for the term in which you expect to graduate.  Earlier submission is strongly encouraged.
  3. Your dissertation must be successfully defended 6 weeks prior to the last day of the semester.  Refer to the Important Dates for Graduate Students and Coordinators.
  4. Registration is required for the term in which you plan to defend.
  5. Your academic record must be reviewed for any unmet requirements:
    • Any incomplete (I) or progress (P) grades must be removed.
    • Transfer credits must be approved and processed by the beginning of the semester of intended graduation. 
    • Transfer credits must have been completed within the 6-year time limit to count toward degree requirements.
    • Degrees NOT completed within the university's 6-year time limit, require an approved Petition of Exception (a 2-year extension for a maximum of an 8 year total).
    • Overall GPA to graduate with a doctoral degree is 3.0.
  6. Verification that all comprehensive exams have been completed must be submitted by the department to the Office of Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning (520 O’Dowd).
  7. Dissertations must be received in the Office of Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning (520 O'Dowd) 4 weeks before the last day of the semester.
  8. If graduation requirements are not completed by the deadlines, you must change your graduation date by contacting the Office of Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning (520 O’Dowd).
     

Doctoral students are not eligible to participate in commencement without completing all degree requirements, including dissertation defense and submission of an approved dissertation, signatures of all committee members and compliance of dissertation requirements outlined in the Guide to the Preparation of Theses and Dissertations.
