U.S. Diversity
Overview
The U.S. diversity requirement, which includes gender, race and ethnicity, can be met in one of the seven knowledge explorations areas or in the major. A course can qualify to meet the diversity requirement if one-half of its content deals with issues relating to at least two of the following: race, gender or ethnicity.
The inclusion of the diversity requirement in OU’s general education program increases the likelihood that students will receive diversity instruction in more than a single course during their tenure at Oakland University, allows for a broader range of courses and provides a deeper understanding of the complexity of diversity in our culture.
By Fall 2008, Oakland University expects to raise the requirement from one course to two courses with diversity content.
Learning Outcomes
The student will:
- demonstrate knowledge of how diverse value systems and societal structures are influenced by at least two of the following: race, gender, ethnicity
- identify major challenges and issues these raise in society
