A Message from Oakland University’s Provost

Oakland University’s new general education program builds on a strong history of delivering an exceptional liberal arts education with a renewed focus on introducing students to a broad base of knowledge and understanding necessary to lead fulfilling and productive lives of leadership and service.

By touching each and every undergraduate student who walks our campus or interacts with their professors and peers online, Oakland University’s general education program will better prepare students to make meaningful and substantial contributions to the workplace, society and academia. Our graduates will hold solid skills in critical and creative thinking, effective communication and teamwork. They will be able to navigate and use information technology and interact with others in our increasingly global society.

Unique opportunities for real-world learning and knowledge application – already a hallmark of an Oakland education – will become a regular part of the Oakland undergraduate experience. More than ever, students will have the ability to take their learning beyond the classroom through required participation in research or creative endeavors; internships, field experiences or cooperative education; and study abroad experiences. Our renewed general education program will equip students with core writing, analytical, technology and communications skills that employers demand.

In short, our graduates will leave Oakland University ready to succeed, lead and serve in the global community.

Virinder Moudgil
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
