General Education – Your Road Map to Success

General Education at Oakland UniversityThrough its renewed general education program, Oakland University offers a distinctive undergraduate education that produces liberally educated students who hold specialized skills and knowledge in their interest area, and enhanced writing, analytical, technological and human relations skills. The program also provides graduates with a special understanding of racial, ethnic and gender diversity, and the global environment in which we live.

Oakland University’s general education program is comprised of three parts: foundations, explorations and integration, which complement a student’s major. Through an emphasis on important capacities that cross the three areas, students further enhance their abilities in critical thinking, information literacy, effective communication and social awareness. Finally, students integrate their learning through knowledge application experiences and a capstone project that creates a unique opportunity for the student to synthesize their knowledge and apply it to real-world problems. This integrated knowledge forms the basis for students to continue to learn and grow throughout their lives, and prepares them for productive lives of leadership and service.
