Oakland University Sponsored by the Departments of Art and Art History; English; Modern Languages and Literatures; Music, Theatre and Dance; Rhetoric, Journalism and Communication; Sociology/Anthropology; and the Center for International Programs. The interdisciplinary Concentration in Film Aesthetics and History offers multiple perspectives for studying theoretical and critical aspects of film. The three introductory courses examine narrative, aesthetic and technical developments; the history courses put emphasis on major directors, genres and trends. The theoretical course is concerned with the uniqueness of film, its relation to other forms of verbal and plastic arts, and special approaches needed for analysis and enjoyment. The range of viewing experiences and the variety of approaches to the medium provide an excellent preparation for students seeking careers in advertising, publishing, journalism, visual media or teaching, as well as for those wishing to pursue film studies on the graduate level.
