African American Celebration 2007 - Call for Proposals

Festivities for African American Celebration 2007 will begin Monday, January 15th with the celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The African American Celebration Committee seeks program proposals related to this year's theme, “Through the Strength of My Ancestry: Still I Rise”, that will engage and inspire the campus community. Potential programs may include but are not limited to guest speakers, African American arts and crafts, poetry readings, panel discussions. Proposals must be submitted to the Center for Multicultural Initiatives by Friday, October 27, 2006 at 5.p.m. You can download the proposal form below.

African American Celebration 2007 Calendar

Welcome Reception

Newly admitted CMI Scholars (students who receive OUTAS, Wade-McCree and Compact scholarships) and their parents attend the Welcome Reception during the summer. Students and parents have the opportunity to meet the Center for Multicultural Initiatives staff and peer mentors, as well as faculty and administrators. In addition to an address by the president of the university, an overview of the CMI scholars program is presented, along with specific details about program components.


Welcome Cookout

The Welcome Cookout takes place during the first week of the fall semester known as Welcome Week. It is a collaborative effort sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Initiatives and several student groups. The Cookout provides new students with their first opportunity to meet Oakland University faculty, staff and members of student organizations.

This event gives new students a positive view of the university and gives Oakland an opportunity to welcome them into the university family.


CMI EventsPeer Mentor Events

In addition to individual meetings, there are opportunities provided throughout the academic year for the Center for Multicultural Initiatives staff, peer mentors, mentees and OU community to participate in group activities such as:

  • Bowling night
  • Skating
  • Evening Dinner


Oakland University Student Leader Weekend

CMI Events OUDSL is a collaborative initiative between the Center for Multicultural Initiatives, the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Management, and Residence Halls. The purpose of the event is to bring a culturally diverse body of prospective students to Oakland University.

If you have been accepted to Oakland University and have a grade point average of at least a 3.0, a composite ACT score of 20 or above and are interested in attending the event, please contact the Office of Admissions.


Other Programs

In addition, CMI co-sponsors a host of programs including: African American Celebration, Cultural Awareness Week, Hispanic Celebration, University Counseling Center, Diversity Program Proposals, etc.

Open or available to all students regardless of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.
