Research Interests

Professor Zeng's research interests are electroanalytical and surface chemistry at solid electrodes; development of new analytical techniques, chemical and biosensors; hydrodynamic voltammetry, electroactive polymers. The principal techniques are: electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), rotating ring disk electrodes (RRDE), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Biacore surface plasmon resonance (SPR), reflectance adsorption FT-IR, scanning probe techniques (i.e. atomic force microscope (AFM)) and scanning tunneling microscope (STM)) and Network Impedance Analyzer.

Current research focuses on developing piezobiosensors and electrochemical sensors for detection in complex environmental and clinical samples by combining excellent sensitivity of electrochemical and mass sensing with the superb selectivity of biological recognition processes (e.g. protein-protein interactions, DNA-protein interactions, Carbohydrate-protein interactions). Improvements in the affinity, specificity, sensitivity and selectivity and mass production of the molecular recognition elements are pursued by collaboration with biologists, bioorganic chemists and material chemists at Oakland and other universities.

Other projects in Professor Zeng’s research group are: (1) development of analytical applications using ionic liquids; (2) studying solid-liquid electrochemical Interfacial phenomena. i.e., the mechanisms of solvent transfer and ion transfer processes of conductive polymers and their effect at polymer microscopic structure during the redox switching. It is expected that such fundamental study will lead to development of new electrode surfaces in which interesting properties can be tailored by incorporating appropriate choosing pair of inorganic, organic and biological constituents.
