W elcome to Chemistry at Oakland University!
The Chemistry Department at Oakland University offers a full
curriculum in undergraduate and graduate education in the chemical
sciences. At the undergraduate level we offer an American Chemical
Society certified undergraduate B.S. Chemistry major, a B.A. Chemistry major, a Biochemistry major (jointly with Biology), an Engineering Chemistry major (jointly with Engineering), and an Environmental Health major. At the graduate level, the Chemistry Department offers a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences -Health and Environmental Chemistry as well as a Master of Science
degree in Chemistry. The M.S. degree in Chemistry may be completed with a research-based thesis or may be completed with a course work only option.
The seventeen full-time faculty in Chemistry are committed to providing the highest quality teaching and research. Research participation by
undergraduates is a distinctive part of the department's
activity. Our students have the opportunity to work with departmental faculty, carrying out research projects at the forefront of chemical, biochemical, and
environmental research. Undergraduates often publish their research in peer-reviewed journals as well as present their work at national meetings of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society at which undergraduates can present their work.
The Chemistry Department is housed in the modern Science and
Engineering building and has advanced laboratory facilities for
research and teaching. We are well-equipped with modern
instrumentation for chemical research and teaching. Major instruments include
high-performance computational chemistry facilities, advanced
instrumentation such as FT-NMR, electron spin resonance, atomic
absorption, GC-mass spectroscopy, FT-IR, UV-visible spectrometers, a
Nd-Yag dye laser and instruments for Biochemistry such as flow
cytometers, ultracentrifuges, and cell culture facilities. In January 2009, we installed a new Bruker Avance 400 MHz NMR spectrometer.
You are cordially invited to visit us or to contact any faculty member for further information about undergraduate and graduate programs and research activities.
