Meeting of Minds Undergraduate Conference: A Celebration of Research and Creative Endeavors

Friday, May 16, 2008

Meeting of Minds XVI - Overview

All undergraduate students at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, the University of Michigan-Flint, and Oakland University (regardless of discipline or major) are encouraged to participate in the 16th annual Meeting of Minds Undergraduate Research Conference. Since 1993 this one day event has provided a forum for the presentation and publication of undergraduate student research and creative endeavor. This shared tri-university initiative showcases the results of student-faculty collaboration across all academic disciplines. Undergraduate researchers gain valuable experience in the conduct of research and the process of scholarly collaboration, while they learn to deliver and attend professional presentations. Undergraduates who are contemplating involvement in research should also attend to learn about exciting future possiblities.

Meeting of Minds XVI - Journal Guidelines
Submission Window: May 16 to June 16, 2008

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

Registration: All students, faculty, and other guests who are interested in attending this event should complete a general registration form. In addition, student presenters must complete a student presenter form.

Registration for the event will open on Monday, January 28, 2008; registration has been EXTENDED to Friday, March 28, 2008. Specific information on the meeting will be communicated electronically to those who have registered. Also, prior to the meeting, the program will be available at this site to assist attendees in planning the day.

Presenter Guidelines: Before completing the student presenter form, students should consult with their faculty mentors and prepare an abstract of no more than 150 words that accurately and concisely describes the work to be presented. Abstracts that exceed this length will be rejected, as will presentations that have no faculty mentor. Where a group project is involved, only one presenter form needs to be completed; all names will be included on that single form. However, each student should also complete a general registration form.

Students may choose to make oral presentations or poster presentations. The oral presentations will be done in high technology classrooms. PowerPoint presentations can be uploaded from individual USB jump drives onto a providend PC. Students may use their personal laptop computers which can be connected to the room's projection system via a provided VGA cable. The rooms also have document cameras and DVD/VHS video playback capabilities. Presentations should be planned to last about 10 minutes, so that 3 to 5 minutes can be allowed for questions. Poster presentations will take place in a central location in the Oakland Center. Poster board space of about 6ft wide by 4ft deep will be provided. Additional information will be conveyed after submission of presentation form.

Students who make presentations at the May 16 event are also eligible to submit their research for publication in Volume 10 of Meeting of Minds Journal of Undergraduate Research. The guidelines and deadlines for submission of papers will be available early in 2008. Please consult this website at that time.
