Overview of Advising in the College of Arts and Sciences

The advising office staff welcomes visits from students who have declared Arts and Sciences majors, undecided students who wish to investigate college programs and prospective students who plan to attend Oakland University. We are committed to helping students achieve their academic and personal goals.

What questions can advisers answer?

  • How long will it take to complete a degree?
  • What courses satisfy requirements?
  • Is the major I've selected appropriate for my goals?
  • Should I consider a minor or concentration?
  • Can I take courses at another school during the summer?

When should you see an adviser?

  • When you are re-entering college after a long absence
  • Before or just after declaring a major
  • If an academic policy or requirement needs clarification
  • When you begin to experience academic difficulty
  • When you need help developing an educational plan
  • Prior to your final semester before graduation
  • If you wish to appeal for an exception to a policy
  • When you need to review your course selection
