Transcripts Separated by Size Allows Visualization of How Far Along the DNA Template RNA Polymerase II Has Moved from the Point of Transcription Initiation

In gel-electrophoresis, the mixture of all transcripts that were formed in a single transcription reaction are loaded at the same spot at the top of the gel. Smaller transcripts migrate faster through the matrix of a gel than the larger transcripts. As a convention, the top of the gel figure shows the origin of migration, where the larger, slower migrating transcripts are found, and the bottom shows the leading edge of the migrating sample, consisting of the smaller transcripts.
