Art History InternshipsInternships: Field Experience in Art and Art History
The department encourages all art history majors to complete AH399 Field Experience in Art History and all studio art majors to complete SA399 Field Experience in Studio Art. An internship not only provides a real-life experience in the arts, but also provides useful contacts for employment possibilities and recommendations for graduate school.

Placements have included the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, Chelsea Antiques, the Oakland University Art Gallery, Meadow Brook Hall, Paul Haig Gallery, Arnold Klein Gallery, Paint Creek Center for the Arts, Creative Arts Center in Pontiac, Detroit Artists Market, Victor Associates, Gallery Nikko in Birmingham, The Print Gallery in Southfield, the Oakland County Office of Arts, Culture and Film, and the Visual Resources Library in the Department of Art and Art History.

Students are required to meet Professor Susan E. Evans, Art and Art History Field Experience Advisor, in the semester before the beginning of the semester in which they wish to intern.

Internships and Other Opportunities at the Oakland University Art Gallery, Meadow Brook Hall and in the Art Community

Oakland University Art Gallery
There are opportunities for students to be involved in the exhibitions at the Oakland University Art Gallery through internships (AH399 Field Experience in Art History or SA399 Field Experience in Studio Art) and research for exhibitions sponsored by the faculty of the Department of Art and Art History. Students are encouraged to visit the gallery throughout the academic year. In addition, drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs by studio art majors are exhibited at the gallery in the Senior Thesis exhibitions at the end of the winter semester.

Meadow Brook Hall
The Department of Art and Art History has established a number of exciting programs with Oakland University's Meadow Brook Hall. Opportunities at Meadow Brook Hall include: internships (AH399 Field Experience in Art History), research (AH491 Directed Research in Art History or AH493 Independent Research in Art History) and docent training. In addition, Meadow Brook Hall has invited all art and art history majors to visit the house during regular hours for FREE. Simply pick up an Art History or Studio Art Major Identification Card from the departmental office and present it to the desk at Meadow Brook Hall. There is no limit to the number of times that you can use this card to visit the house. Meadow Brook Hall also awards a student assistantship. For a description of the Meadow Brook Hall Student Assistantship see Scholarships and Awards.
