Scholarships and Awards

Scholarships and AwardsUpon application, the department may award the following scholarships, grants and awards for study, travel, research and creative activities. With the exception of the Travel to Art Museums Grant and the Database Research Grant, students must apply prior to their intended study or travel. Application forms are available in the departmental office.

These grants and awards are supported either through endowments or gifts to the Department of Art and Art History made by faculty, alumni and friends.

Mildred B. Matthews Scholarship in Art History. Annually the department awards a $500 tuition scholarship to one art history major. This scholarship was created to honor Mildred Gregory Byars Matthews, the wife of George T. Matthews, a charter member of the Oakland University faculty. It is supported by an endowment and by gifts made to the department. The applicant must be a declared art history major in good standing and must have been enrolled in classes at Oakland University for two consecutive (fall/winter) semesters. The applicant must also have completed 20 credit hours in art history prior to application and must have demonstrated citizenship within the department or field. Applications for this scholarship are accepted during the winter semester, and the recipient is announced at the end of that semester. 2008 Deadline: March 15

Mark Murphy Endowed Scholarship in Photography. The Mark Murphy Endowed Scholarship was established in 2000 in memory of Mark Murphy, son of Professor Brian Murphy, for the purposes of awarding a half-tuition scholarship to a studio art student specializing in photography. Until the endowment goal has been reached, we will annually offer a $750 scholarship to an undergraduate student who shows promise in the field of photography. The applicant must be a full-time student, must have sophomore standing, must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, must have a declared studio art major, must be enrolled in at least one photography class during the year he/she holds the scholarship, and must submit a portfolio of 10 photo-based art works.

Marion Adams Bunt Endowed Fund in Art and Art History. The Marion Adams Bunt Endowment Fund grants awards to undergraduate students majoring in either art history or studio art to support curricular and extracurricular activities relating to art history or studio art and will enhance their educational experience, including individual and/or group travel in the U.S. and abroad, research and other creative activities. Students may apply individually or as a group. See the departmental academic adviser or secretary for further information and application forms.

Writing Excellence Award in Art History. Any Oakland University undergraduate student may submit for consideration a paper written for an art history course at the 300 level or higher. First prize $125, second prize $75, third prize $50. See the departmental academic adviser for further information and application forms. The Writing Excellence Award in Art History is announced during the winter semester. 2008 Deadline: April 18

Travel Stipend in Art and Art History. The Department of Art and Art History may sponsor one or more art history or studio art majors who travel abroad with an official Oakland University group tour under the leadership of a member of the studio art or art history faculty. The applicant must be a declared art history or studio art major in good standing. Other requirements may vary. The amount of the stipend depends upon available funds.

Study and Travel Grant in Art and Art History. This grant of $200 is intended to provide the art history or studio art major with the funds to pay for entry fees to museums and architectural monuments while studying and/or traveling in countries other than the United States and Canada. The applicant must be a declared art history or studio art major in good standing and must have been enrolled in classes at Oakland University for two consecutive (fall/winter) semesters prior to the proposed study and travel. To apply, the student must complete an application form and submit a copy of the airline ticket prior to travel. Upon returning, the student will write for our departmental records a brief description of how the grant was used. Students may wish to enroll in AH396 Directed Study Abroad in Art History in conjunction with their travel.

Graduate Study Grant in Art and Art History. This grant of $200 is intended to provide the art history or studio art major with textbooks or art supplies during her/his first semester as a graduate student in art history, studio art or a related area. The applicant must be a declared art history or studio art major in good standing and must have been enrolled in classes at Oakland University for two consecutive (fall/winter) semesters prior to their first semester in a graduate program. To apply, the student must complete an application form and submit a copy of a letter of acceptance from a graduate program in art history or studio art prior to the first semester of study. Art history and studio art alumni may also apply for this grant up to one year after graduation. After completing her/his first semester of graduate study, the student will send us a brief note regarding his/her academic progress.

Database Research Grant in Art and Art History. This grant of up to $75 is to be used by an art history or studio art major engaged in 400-level art or art history research using proprietary databases via the Kresge Library's Office of Computer Searches: e.g. Dissertation Abstracts and the Bibliography of the History of Art. The applicant must be a declared art history or studio art major in good standing and must have been enrolled in classes at Oakland University for two consecutive (fall/winter) semesters in order to apply. To apply, the student must consult with the art history faculty person with whom she/he is doing her/his research paper to determine if database research is appropriate, and to devise a database search strategy. The student will then make an appointment with the Kresge Library database specialist who will further refine the database search strategy. The student must complete an application form during the time period of the directed research project and, if the grant is awarded, she/he will be given a letter authorizing the use of the art and art history gift account number up to $75.

Undergraduate Research Matching Grant in Art and Art History. Upon application, the department may award a grant not to exceed $100 to any art history or studio art major, art history minor or studio art minor who receives a University Undergraduate Research Grant. This departmental grant is intended to supplement the initial grant, not to reduce the amount initially requested from the university research committee. If awarded, the departmental grant can be used to cover appropriate documented unanticipated or overrun expenses incurred in connection with the approved research project or creative activity. The applicant must be a declared major or minor in good standing and must have been enrolled in classes at Oakland University for two consecutive (fall/winter) semesters in order to apply. To apply, the student must complete an application form and submit a copy of the Undergraduate Research Grant proposal and letter from the Oakland University Research Committee stating the amount of the award during the time period of the directed research project.

Travel to Art Museums Grant in Art and Art History. The department supports small grants of $25 to art history and studio art majors and minors who travel to art museums as part of their academic study. In order to qualify, the applicant must be a declared art history major, studio art major, art history minor or studio art minor in good standing, and must have enrolled in classes at Oakland University for two consecutive (fall/winter) semesters. The museum must be located in a city outside a 3-hour radius from Oakland University, for example, beyond Detroit, Toledo and Ann Arbor. To apply, the student must complete an application form, describe the collection visited, and submit proof of entry into the museum.

Other Sponsored Awards & Assistantships

Werner Holzbock Humanities Award. Scholarships of $1,500 to $2,500 are awarded annually to six juniors and seniors majoring in the humanities. This includes majors in art history, english, history, linguistics, philosophy and modern languages. Criteria will be announced. This award is supported by an endowment administered by the College of Arts and Sciences. The award is announced during the winter semester. 2008 Deadline: March 15

Meadow Brook Hall Student Assistantship in Art History. Meadow Brook Hall annually awards a $2,000 research and curatorial assistantship to a major in art history or studio art. Research involves working on a group of paintings or decorative art objects in the hall, and assistance with the Holiday Walk program. The assistantship is announced early in the fall semester.
