Health Services

Acute and primary care services are provided for students. Staff may be seen on an urgent care basis.

PREVENTIVE CARE - WOMEN'S HEALTH

  • Pap smears are recommended at age 18-21 or when a woman becomes sexually active.
  • Contraceptive counseling includes information about oral contraceptives, condoms and spermicide, as well as Depo Provera injections.
  • Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) are available for $20.00/month. Students may obtain their physical and pelvic exam at Graham Health Center or bring recent pap smear reports from other providers and obtain birth control without a full pelvic exam.
  • Emergency Contraceptive Pill (morning after pill) is effective up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.
    • Cost: Cost $25.00 Office visit not needed.
  • Pregnancy Testing is available by urine specimen. A urine test may be performed one week after the first day of the missed menstrual period with immediate results.
    • Cost: Urine pregnancy test $15.00 (plus $25.00 office visit if needed).
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases.
    • Anonymous HIV testing . Results take 2 weeks. Cost: $10.00
    • Gonorrhea/Chlamydia testing.
    • Herpes and Syphilis screening.
  • Gynecological problems can be diagnosed and treated including problems with vaginal discharge, menstrual cramps, pelvic pain and discomfort with sexual intercourse.

MEDICATIONS

Prescription medications such as antibiotics are available at discounted prices for students who receive care at the Health Center. Over-the-counter medications and many other health-related items not requiring a prescription, may also be purchased at the Health Center including:

  • Tylenol-type pain relievers, Ibuprofen, and Aspirin
  • Mucinex
  • Cough syrup
  • Ear wax softener
  • Condoms – 10 condoms for $2.12
  • Emergency Contraceptive - Plan B $25.00

The following Oral Contraceptive Pills are available at a cost of $20.00 a pack for patients:

  • Aviane
  • Cryselle
  • Junel Fe
  • Enpresse
  • Apri Tabs

BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING

Blood pressure monitoring is available for OU staff and students. The cost of the initial visit is $35.00 There is no charge for subsequent blood pressure monitoring.

STUDENT INSURANCE

Health Care Insurance is available to any enrolled student of Oakland University. Insurance is offered through Maksin Management. Application packets are available in the lobby of the Graham Health Center, or complete details are available at: http://www.maksin.com Policy Number AMH9076267.

LABORATORY

The Health Center offers various diagnostic and laboratory testing designed to meet the needs of our students. These services must be ordered by a health care provider at the Graham Health Center.

HEALTH PROMOTION

Graham Health Center engages in campus-wide health education activities to promote the health and wellness of Oakland University students. Individualized patient education covers a wide variety of health issues including sexuality, stress management, nutrition, smoking cessation.

ALLERGY INJECTION THERAPY

The following information is needed for records at Graham Health Center prior to starting allergy injection therapy:

  • Allergist Name, Address, and Telephone Number
  • Serum
  • Dose Record
  • Date prophylaxis started, and any reactions
  • Brief Physical Exam (within past 6 months)

The first injection from a new bottle of serum or if for any reason your serum dilution concentration is changed the first injection must be given by the allergist.

You will be asked to wait 20 minutes after your injection at the Graham Health Center.

Cost: $10.00 for first injection and $2.00 for each additional injection.

FLU SHOTS

May be obtained at Graham Health Center or at Flu Clinics. These clinics are held in the main hall of the Oakland Center and/or Graham Health Center. Dates and times will be announced and are dependent on vaccine availability.

IMMUNIZATIONS

Tdap - A booster is recommended every 10 years

  • Cost: $35.00

Hepatitis B - 3 injections are required for adequate immunization. It is recommended that these be given over a 6 month period.

  • Cost: $35.00 for each individual injection

Meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine

  • Cost: $105.00

HPV Vaccine

  • Cost $140.00
* Administration fee of $5.00 will be applied per injection

HIV/STD TESTING AND COUNSELING

Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases is available at the Graham Health Center.

  • Anonymous HIV testing results take 2 weeks. Cost: $10.00
  • Gonorrhea/Chlamydia testing.

NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING

Information, evaluation, and referrals for eating disorders are available. The Health Center also provides diet counseling for weight loss, cholesterol control and promotion of healthy eating habits.

WORK AND SCHOOL PHYSICALS

Physicals can be performed on a scheduled basis. Appointments are required.

SMOKING CESSATION PROGRAMS

Group programs are offered throughout the year. Our American Lung Association certified facilitator also offers individual counseling and support as well as information about other assistive measures for smoking cessation.
