Questions about the Counseling Center

  1. What does it cost to receive counseling?

The first six sessions are free to currently registered Oakland University students. After the sixth session, the cost is only $12 per session. There is no limit to the number of sessions you can obtain at the Counseling Center.

  2. Do my counseling records become a part of my student records at Oakland University?

No, counseling records are maintained separately and are treated as medical records. Strict confidentiality is maintained in the Counseling Center.

  3. What types of backgrounds do the counselors have?

The Counseling Center is comprised of 3 licensed psychologists, a limited licensed psychologist and a number of interns who are in the final stages of their work toward receiving a doctorate in psychology or a Master's degree in counseling. All interns are supervised regularly by a psychologist.

  4. I always thought that only people who were really "crazy" went to a counselor. Is that true?

No, a vast majority of persons seeking counseling are there because they want to talk with a counselor to problem-solve, make a decision or simply to talk something through with the assistance of a counselor. Others feel depressed or may be experiencing trouble in a relationship or have experienced a major loss. There is no one cause that brings persons to a counseling relationship, except the desire to solve a problem.

  5. Is the Counseling Center only open when classes are in session?

No, the Counseling Center is open 51 weeks a year. Regular hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with some evening appointments available. The Counseling Center is closed from December 24 through the New Year's holiday.
