- What does it cost to receive counseling?
The first six sessions are free to currently registered Oakland University students. After the sixth session, the cost is only $12 per session. There is no limit to the number of sessions you can obtain at the Counseling Center.
- Do my counseling records become a part of my student records at Oakland University?
No, counseling records are maintained separately and are treated as medical records. Strict confidentiality is maintained in the Counseling Center.
- What types of backgrounds do the counselors have?
The Counseling Center is comprised of 3 licensed psychologists, a limited licensed psychologist and a number of interns who are in the final stages of their work toward receiving a doctorate in psychology or a Master's degree in counseling. All interns are supervised regularly by a psychologist.
- I always thought that only people who were really "crazy" went to a counselor. Is that true?
No, a vast majority of persons seeking counseling are there because they want to talk with a counselor to problem-solve, make a decision or simply to talk something through with the assistance of a counselor. Others feel depressed or may be experiencing trouble in a relationship or have experienced a major loss. There is no one cause that brings persons to a counseling relationship, except the desire to solve a problem.
- Is the Counseling Center only open when classes are in session?
No, the Counseling Center is open 51 weeks a year. Regular hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with some evening appointments available. The Counseling Center is closed from December 24 through the New Year's holiday.
